Yorbund/Regina
Yorbund/Regina (C7C6503-7 Non-industrial)
The Yorbund system consists of Neverwhere
(X100000-0), a small hot planetoid, Yorbund Prime (C7C6503-7), Harrier
(D211206-9), another small planetoid, albeit cold, and the Yorbund asteroid
belt (E000000-0). A considerable amount of planetoids can be found in two cloud
layers outside the asteroid belt, with the furthest cloud reaching a third of a
light year from the dim red star in the middle of the system.
The surface of Yorbund is as challenging as
an environment can be. The pressure is high, and the freezing atmosphere is
composed of several corrosive and poisonous components. This lethal soup is
also propelled around by winds ranging up to several hundred kilometers per
hour. The heavy winds also carry needle-sharp pieces of volcanic glass and
stone that will peel of layers of the heaviest protective gear in mere hours.
Yorbund is one of the more dynamic
colonizing projects of the Empire. The system was initially surveyed by the
Third Imperium back in 445, but it was deemed far too hostile to actually settle.
However, several deposits of very rare metals and minerals were found in 1080,
both below the surface and in the deep ammonium oceans. The Empire initiated a
considerable colonization project, with significant settlement bonuses paid to
anyone who would be willing to relocate into the vast caverns that had been
turned into a series of modern towns and mine shafts. Surface mining is mainly
conducted remotely, although intrepid miners venture out onto the surface in
shielded ATVs and even extraordinarily heavily protected pressure suits. The
vast majority of the population is however engaged in hydroponic farming,
trade, and other occupations. The government is simply an extension of direct
Imperial rule.
The starport is also located below the
surface of Yorbund, and any approach has to be made by especially shielded
ships so as to avoid the effects of the extreme weather. A small orbital
platform provides transfer opportunities and add-on protection for ships that
aren’t equipped with suitable shielding.
