Nasemin/Aramis
Nasemin/Aramis
B98A422 B S Water world, end of Imperial route into the sector…
The Nasemin system is
composed of Nasemin I (X100000-0), a small planetoid, Nasemin II, an asteroid
belt (X000000-0), Nasemin III a rocky planet with a trace atmosphere
(X-611000-0), Nasemin Prime (B98A422-B), Nasemin V (X104000-0), an icy
planetoid, and Nasemin VI, a massive planet with exotic atmosphere (EBA1000-0,
unmanned IISS emergency base/beacon).
The surface of Nasemin
is covered by a fairly warm primitive ocean with few advanced life forms. There
are a few small fish and mollusk analogues as well as a rich broth of single-
and multi-cellular organisms. The weather is tropical with frequent storms.
The system was probably
surveyed a couple of centuries before the Imperium was founded some 1,200 years
ago, and the name was supposedly given by Purvi Wilthan, the Hindibuddhan
captain of the survey vessel Ariadne,
after an intense spiritual experience. Nasemin was not visited very often until
the Imperium sponsored the construction of a fairly significant floating
platform city that allowed the establishment of a full-fledged colony in 450.
However, after two very prosperous centuries that saw both expansion and the
construction of some magnificent developments, the population declined from
approximately 500,000 in its prime to less than a thousand as the Imperium
started decaying.
In 1150, the expansive
Empire established a scout base in orbit around Nasemin, and the system was
claimed for the Empire. As scout teams started surveying the surface of
Nasemin, It turned out that the old city of Nasemin had turned into a very
diverse town full of traders, scavengers, guns for hire, tinkers and small-scale
manufacturers, all living in the massive ruins and steel caverns of the old floating
city. The starport is fairly substantial, considering the size of the
population, but it serves as a base for trade and exploration throughout the
system, the subsector, and beyond. Nasemin Down Starport is also somewhat of a
legendary spot, considering the many contacts with the outer systems as well as
the very colorful inhabitants of Nasemin. The Travellers’ Aid Society hostel is
one of the more original designs in the Empire, and it honors a fictional
Indian/Terran past in line with the legend of Nasemin’s discovery. There is no
real orbital starport, but the Freeman Trader’s Association maintains a
navigation beacon and emergency support platform in geosynchronous orbit above
Nasemin Down.
The IISS has a small
office in the Down Starport, but the main IISS efforts are focused on
supporting exploration and expansion outside the Nasemin system. Approximarely
150 IISS personnel work at the base, a third of which support the X-boat traffic
while the remaining personnel works with science and exploration.
Nasemin is a direct
democracy of sorts, with citizens voting in daily elections regarding practical
matters, although policy is decided by an informal coalition system. The estimated
population of Nasemin as of 360-1199 consisted of 19,298 sentient beings: 10%
Vargr, 15% other and 75%human of various backgrounds living in a diverse urban
jumble. Over time, the tropical climate has enabled flora and fauna to spread
all over Nasemin City, and Nasemin sports a rich diversity of animal and plant
life from all over the Spinward Marshes. Some of these life forms, especially
outside the settled areas, can be quite hazardous to unwary urban explorers.
The tech level may be
listed as B, but various segments of society use a wide range of new and old
technologies in their daily undertakings. Many strange and wondrous things can
be found on the streets and in the alleys of Nasemin, but any visitor should be
wary of scams when walking around Nasemin.
